While he was on vacation with his family in Hawaii, he had the opportunity to meet actor Kirk Cameron and his sister, Candace Cameron Bure, who is also an actress. James was finally extended an invitation to come to stay with them in Los Angeles. After spending over a year as a student at Oklahoma State University and participating in the production of “Bye Bye Birdie” at his college, he decided to leave school and relocate to Los Angeles in order to pursue his love in acting.

The first work experience for James came in the form of a role in the pilot episode of The Nanny (1993), in which he played Eddie, Margaret Sheffield’s lover. After that, he was cast in the Canadian television series Boogies Diner (1994), in which he appeared for the entirety of one season. After the conclusion of that show, he was given a guest-starring role on Fox’s Party of Five in the character of the original Griffin (1994).

His first major break came when he was cast in the lead role of the ABC series Second Noah, which did not last long (1996). The young actor had adequate exposure from the public and even managed to win the hearts of other teenage ladies, despite the fact that the show did not run for a particularly long period of time.

It was in 1996 when he tried out for the part of a movie that would later be titled Primal Fear (1996), but he was ultimately unsuccessful and Edward Norton was cast in the part. Two years later, in 1998, he was given the main role in the film 54, but he declined the opportunity. After some time, another actor, Ryan Phillippe, took over the part.
