Iggy Azalea

The rapper and singer Iggy Azalea was born Amethyst Amelia Kelly on June 7, 1990, in Sydney, Australia. When she was quite young, her family relocated to Mullumbimby in the Australian state of New South Wales. Her dad, Brendan Kelly, was a painter and comic artist. Tanya’s mom cleaned hotels and vacation homes.

She stopped attending high school and began helping her mother earn money so she could fulfill her lifelong ambition of studying in the United States. At the age of 14, she began rapping and soon after joined a group with two other young women. Her bandmates weren’t committed to making a living as musicians, so they eventually split.

She’s loved hip-hop since she was 11 years old. Unfortunately, she was lonely and alone at home because no one shared her passions. When she met Derek, a youngster from the Bahamas she had met online, they became fast friends, and she began showing him her rap tracks and asking for his feedback.

She managed to persuade her parents to let her have a vacation in the United States shortly before she turned 16 and she and her family jetted off to Miami, where Derek was living at the time. She told her loved ones not long after that she was leaving for the United States to pursue a career in music and wouldn’t be returning any time soon. She overstayed her work visa in the United States for a total of six years. Iggy Azalea got her start in the music industry when she collaborated with Backbone of the Atlanta, Georgia hip-hop group Dungeon Family. While there, she met FKi and Natalie Sims, two artists with whom she would later work.

The year 2010 saw her departure from Los Angeles. Her debut extended mixtape “Ignorant Art” was released the following year. Her record was hailed for its aggression, and the music videos for her songs became viral. In 2012, she released her first studio album, titled “The New Classic,” with the support of Southern rapper T.I. after briefly dabbling in the modeling industry. As a result of objections from her label, “Interscope Records,” the album’s release date was pushed back. In April 2014, she released the album through Def Jam Recordings.
Her EP, dubbed “Glory,” was released to keep her followers occupied. The song “Murda Bizness,” originally intended for her first album, was included. In June 2012, she dropped a new single named “Millionaire Misfits.”

In October 2012, she dropped her second mixtape titled “TrapGold.” Grammy-winning producer Diplo collaborated with ‘FKi’ on the album. She republished her album The New Classic in November 2014 under the name Reclassified. Five brand-new tracks, including the singles “Beg for It” and “Trouble,” were included on the album. Digital Distortion, her second studio album, was set for release in July of 2016. She and her long-term partner Nick Young recently split up, therefore she decided to push out the album’s release to 2017.

In August of 2018, under the label Island Records, she dropped her EP titled “Survive the Summer.” Tracks like “Tokyo Snow Trip” and “Kream” were included on the EP. She launched her own record label in 2018; at the time, it was called “New Classic Records.” In July of 2019, under her newly rebranded record label Bad Dreams, she released her second studio album, titled “In My Defense.” Critics were generally unimpressed with the album. Iggy Azalea made it onto the ‘Top 10 Freshman List’ by XXL magazine in 2012. She breaks barriers by being both the first woman and non-American rapper to make the cut.

In 2014, she finally broke through and won an award at the “American Music Awards.” In fact, she was nominated for more awards than any other performer that night, with six total. Two of the rap/hip-hop categories she swept were “Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist” and “Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album.”

She received eight nominations, making her the most-nominated artist at that year’s “MTV Video Music Awards.” For the song “Problem,” she and Ariana Grande shared a Grammy for “Best Pop Video.” In the same year, she also took home three “Teen Choice Awards.” Azalea received four ‘Grammy Award nominations in 2015. At the 41st annual “People’s Choice Awards” that same year, she was named “Favorite Hip-Hop Artist.” At the 2015 “Billboard Music Prizes,” she was nominated 12 times and took home three awards.

In June of 2015, they announced their engagement, but a year later, Azalea said they had broken up. Iggy Azalea, an Australian rapper, went from a successful modeling career to a rap music career in the middle of the 2010s, with her songs “Fancy,” “Problem,” and “Black Widow” topping the charts in 2014. Although her first album, The New Classic, reached the Top 3 in both the United States and Australia, she was unable to maintain her cultural momentum and release a follow-up for several years due to problems with her record label and unfinished songs. She decided to pursue modeling as a career in the spring of 2012, signing with Wilhelmina Models International and becoming the “New Face of Levi’s Jeans.” Later that year, she became one of the most talked-about artists in the industry after being featured on the cover of XXL Magazine’s annual Top Ten Freshman issue alongside rappers such as Danny Brown, Roscoe Dash, and French Montana. A lot of people took notice of Azalea because she was the first female rapper from outside the United States to make the list, and one of those people was Diplo, who collaborated with her on her next mixtape, TrapGold, before she signed with Mercury Records and released her first proper album, The New Classic, in early 2014. The tracks “Fancy” and “Black Widow” from the album both were Top 3 hits in their respective regions. The Album was republished later in the year under the name Reclassified and included five brand new recordings, one of which, “Beg for It,” reached the top 30 in the United States.

Her 2016 comeback single “Team” heavily sampled Juvenile’s 1999 smash “Back That Thang Up.” Azalea had trouble getting her official sophomore set released on time for several years. She kept putting out singles, like the 2017 trifecta “Team,” “Mo Bounce,” and “Switch.” In early 2018, she dropped the Quavo-assisted single “Savior,” although it wasn’t included on her second album. The EP, titled Survive the Summer, only contained six songs and was released by Island Records in August. Singles “Tokyo Snow Trip” and “Kream” featuring Tyga were released from the album. Near the year’s conclusion, Azalea severed ties with Island and launched Bad Dreams Records, which would be distributed by Empire.

She released “Sally Walker” in March of 2019 as the first single off her upcoming sophomore album, In My Defense. A defiant crew, including Lil Yachty, Kash Doll, and Juicy J, dropped in that summer and maintained the gloomy, angry brooding of Survive the Summer. In My Defense did quite well on the charts, peaking at number 50 on the U.S. Billboard album chart, despite the many obstacles Azalea had to overcome in the years leading up to the album. Towards the end of 2019, she released another EP titled Wicked Lips, and in 2020, she collaborated with Tinashe on the infectious hit “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.” Azalea came back in 2021 with the tracks “Sip It” featuring Tyga and “Brazil.”

Her second mixtape, “TrapGold,” was released in 2012 after she signed with Island Def Jam Records. The single “Murda Bizness,” which was included on the mixtape, reached number 97 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The New Classic, Iggy’s first proper studio album, was released in 2014 and debuted in the US at position #3 on the Billboard 200. Singles “Fancy” and “Black Widow” from the album both climbed into the top five on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Furthermore, Iggy’s first Grammy nomination came courtesy of “Fancy,” for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Iggy’s second studio album, titled “Digital Distortion,” was released in 2015. The album included the Top 50 song “Team,” which was featured on the album. Although well-liked by some, the album was not as well received by others as her first.

Iggy’s third full-length studio album, titled “Surviving the Summer,” was released in 2018. The album’s track “Savior” was a top 20 smash on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Post Malone, Tyga, and Quavo all made appearances on the record as well.
