American film producer Harvey Weinstein (born March 19, 1952, in Flushing, Queens) cofounded and served as cochairman of Miramax Films with his brother Bob. Once a significant player in the entertainment industry, his career was derailed by accusations of sexual misconduct that led to criminal prosecutions and convictions against numerous others.

When Weinstein was a student at the University at Buffalo in New York, he and his brother promoted rock shows. Their focus shifted to the cinema, and in 1979 the brothers founded Miramax Film Corp. to acquire and distribute motion pictures. Weinstein showed himself as a risk taker by buying offbeat and occasionally controversial films; in 1989, he received the rights to the controversial sex, lies, and videotape, which became Miramax’s first significant hit.

In the early 1990s, Harvey, the more extroverted of the two brothers, became the public face of Miramax as the firm expanded its film production and distribution. The Walt Disney Company bought the company in 1993 for a reported $60 million, but the brothers kept their positions as cochairmen.

Weinstein began establishing Miramax as an entertainment empire as the firm transitioned from a distributor to a ministudio, generating over $1 billion at the annual box office. In 1998, they introduced a television branch, and in 1999, they released Talk magazine as a partnership with Hearst Publishing. Talk Miramax Books was founded in the year 2000. However, as the new initiatives faltered, people feared that Weinstein’s focus was being diverted from the film sector, and Miramax won just one Oscar that year.

Talk magazine folded that same year as well. But in 2003, Weinstein’s films got a record-breaking 40 Academy Award nominations—the most for a company in more than 60 years—and ultimately won nine prizes, including best picture for Chicago. Weinstein’s later Miramax Films releases included Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and Johnny Depp’s Finding Neverland as James M. Barrie.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein formed the Weinstein Company in 2005 after leaving Miramax Films. I’m Not There, an unconventional biopic of Bob Dylan; The Great Debaters, a drama directed by and starring Denzel Washington about a debate team from an African American college that competed against Harvard for the 1935 national championship; and Grindhouse, a double feature of films directed by Robert Rodriguez and Tarantino. Oscar-winning movies like “The Imitation Game,” a biopic about Alan Turing, “The King’s Speech,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “Inglourious Basterds” all came out on The Weinstein.

Several women came out in October 2017 to accuse Harvey Weinstein of decades-long patterns of sexual harassment and abuse. At first, he was suspended from work at the Weinstein Company but was ultimately let go after just a few days. Shortly after, he was kicked out of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

New York City law enforcement began looking into allegations of sexual misconduct made by two women, and in May 2018, Weinstein was charged with many felonies, including rape. Weinstein has denied the allegations against him and the additional charges that have since been brought. He was put on trial in January 2020 and was found guilty of rape and illegal sexual conduct the following month. He got a life sentence plus 23 years in prison.

Aside from the sexual assault allegations, Weinstein had other legal problems. Four women in California accused him of sexual abuse between 2004 and 2013. After a trial in Los Angeles in 2022, a jury found him guilty of rape, violent oral sex, and sexual penetration over an incident with an Italian actress in 2013. However, the jury found Weinstein not guilty or was deadlocked on the remaining allegations made by his other victims.

While working with his brother Bob Weinstein and a mutual friend named Corky Burger, Harvey Weinstein got his start in the music business as the producer of rock concerts under the name Harvey & Corky Productions. Their combined surnames inspired the name of their film distribution company: Miramax. Documentaries directed by Paul McCartney, such as “Rockshow,” were among the films distributed by the company. In 1982, they released a film called The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball to raise awareness for Amnesty International in the United States.

The firm attracted widespread attention after the release of Errol Morris’s crime documentary The Thin Blue Line in 1988. Once Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape’ was released in 1989, the company skyrocketed to the status of a most successful independent film studio in the United States. In 1989, Miramax also released “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover” and “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!,” both of which were initially given an X rating by the MPAA before Weinstein attempted to sue the rating computer. At that point,000 they were both reclassified as NC-17.

When Disney acquired the firm for $80 million after the success of ‘The Crying Game’ in 1993, they went on to distribute ‘Clerks,’ another film by Quentin Tarantino, and release ‘Pulp Fiction’ the following year. After “The English Patient” won an Academy Award for Miramax in 1996, numerous additional hits, such as “Shakespeare in Love” and “Good Will Hunting,” quickly followed.
