Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay born November 8, 1966, is a British chef, television personality, and restaurateur who is best known for his work at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants.

There are a total of 16 Michelin Stars awarded to him, and in 2011, he became one of just three chefs in the United Kingdom to hold three Michelin stars at the same time. Ramsay was born in Scotland and raised in the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon since the age of five. Ramsay’s father worked as a swimming pool manager, a welder, and a shopkeeper at various points in his life, and his mother and sister were also nurses. Ramsay has described his early upbringing as “hopelessly migratory,” as his family was forced to relocate frequently as a result of his father’s ambitions and subsequent failures.

They finally relocated to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1976, close to where he grew up in the Bishopton neighborhood of the town. At various points in his public interviews, Ramsay has declined to label his father as being an alcoholic; nevertheless, in his autobiography Humble Pie, he depicts his childhood as being defined by abuse and neglect at the hands of this “hard-drinking womanizer.” Ramsay moved out of the family home and into a Banbury apartment when he was sixteen years old.

Early in one’s professional life After assessing his options, Ramsay decided to enroll at North Oxfordshire Technical College, which was supported by the Rotary Club, to study Hotel Management because he lacked the necessary O levels to join either the Royal Navy or the police force. In his own words, he described his decision to attend a catering college as “a pure accident.”

After working as a commis chef at the Wroxton House Hotel for a few years, he moved on to run the kitchen and 60-seat dining room at the Wickham Arms, where his friendship with the owner’s wife made the position challenging.

Later, Ramsay relocated to London, where he worked in a number of restaurants before being inspired to work for the volatile Marco Pierre White at Harvey’s. After working at Harvey’s for two years and ten months, Ramsay became dissatisfied with “the rages, the bullying, and the violence,” and concluded that the best way to progress his career was to pursue a degree in French culinary arts.

After a year of working at Le Gavroche, Albert Roux requested Ramsay to join him as his number two at Hotel Diva, a ski resort in the French Alps. Ramsay accepted the offer. From there, Ramsay relocated to Paris, where he began working with Guy Savoy and Jol Robuchon, both of whom were awarded Michelin stars.

When Ramsay returned to London in 1993, he was offered the role of head chef at La Tante Claire, a restaurant in Chelsea. He accepted. Shortly after, Marco White re-entered his life, offering to place him in a head chef job at the Rossmore, which was owned by White’s business partners, as well as a 10 percent ownership stake in the restaurant.

It took fourteen months for the restaurant, which was renamed Aubergine, to receive its first Michelin star. In 1997, Aubergine was awarded its second Michelin star for excellence in cuisine. A disagreement with Ramsay’s business partners, as well as Ramsay’s desire to open his own restaurant, led to his departure from the partnership in 1997, despite the popularity of the restaurant.

Chris Hutcheson, Ramsay founded his own restaurant in Chelsea in 1998, Gordon Ramsay at Royal Hospital Road. It was in 2001 that the restaurant received its third Michelin star, making Ramsay the first Scotsman to accomplish this achievement. Following the success of his first restaurant, Ramsay’s empire has grown swiftly, first launching Petrus in 2001, when six bankers notoriously spent over £44,000 on wine during a single meal, then Amaryllis in Glasgow (which he was eventually forced to close), and finally Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s.

In the following years, he opened restaurants in the Dubai Creek and Connaught Hotels, the latter of which was named for his protégée, Angela Hartnett. Ramsay has recently begun to open restaurants outside of the United Kingdom, with Verre in Dubai being the first.

Gordon Ramsay at the Conrad Tokyo and Cerise by Gordon Ramsay followed, and in November 2006, Gordon Ramsay at the London opened in New York City, earning the title of best newcomer in the city’s prestigious Zagat guide despite receiving mixed reviews from professional critics
