The Southwest Texas State University at San Marcos was where he finished his education and earned a degree in agriculture. Rather than focusing on his studies, he formed a country band and named themselves Ace in the Hole. The Houston, Texas band Ace in the Hole released a handful of albums in the late ’70s on the independent Dallas label D, but they were not commercially successful. The 1995 box set Strait Out of the Box featured recordings from throughout his career. Each bundle contained four discs.
