Garth Brooks

American country music singer-songwriter Garth Brooks, born Troyal Garth Brooks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the best-selling solo artist of all time thanks to his widespread popularity.

His mother had a brief singing career in the 1950s with Capitol Records, so Brooks grew up in a musical household. But at first, he was not musically inclined and instead concentrated on sports. Brooks received a track and field scholarship to Oklahoma State University, where he met guitarist Ty England and began playing at local nightclubs with him.

After graduating with a degree in advertising in 1984, Brooks relocated to Nashville in 1985 to pursue a career in music. However, Brooks’ first foray into the heart of country music was short-lived, and he was back in Oklahoma the next day. After graduating from college in 1985, he married his college sweetheart, Sandy Mahl, and moved back to Nashville the following year.

In 1989, Brooks released his debut self-titled album, and he quickly teamed up with England for a highly successful collaboration in the country music industry. On the road to promoting the first record, Brooks and his band formed a comfortable chemistry that has since become a hallmark of his live shows. Albums by Garth Brooks did well, but nobody saw what was coming. With the help of hits like “Friends in Low Places,” Brooks was able to sell over 17 million copies of his 1990 album, No Fences.

His music straddled the pop/country divide, but his live shows were pure 1970s arena rock spectacle. There were fireworks and light shows at the concerts, and Brooks used a cordless, hands-free microphone that gave him full mobility.

After the success of his debut record, Brooks released another album that defied categorization: Ropin’ the Wind. In its first week, it debuted at number one on the Billboard pop chart, and 14 million copies have since been sold. With the publication of the upbeat Beyond the Season and the introspective The Chase, Brooks veered away from the mainstream sound that characterized his earlier work. Both albums sold over a million copies, but many listeners were disappointed by The Chase, so on In Pieces, Brooks returned to his more upbeat, rock-influenced style. After that came the albums Fresh Horses and Sevens and Double Live, both of which featured live performances.

In 1999, Brooks took the unusual step of creating a straightforward pop album under the alias Chris Gaines. On In the Life of Chris Gaines, Brooks released an album under the guise of the goateed, black leather-clad rocker he created for the role (1999). The album had great production from artists like Babyface and Don Was, but it was overshadowed by people wondering why Brooks had taken such a nontraditional route in his career.

After his divorce from his wife the following year, Brooks stated that he would not return to music until his youngest daughter was 18. Fans were happy to buy Brooks’s return to country pop with his 2001 album Scarecrow, his last before an extended absence. In 2005, Brooks tied the knot with Trisha Yearwood, another prominent country singer, and regular collaborator.

Although Brooks was committed to his “retirement,” he occasionally performed live, including a string of nine sold-out shows in Kansas City, Missouri in 2007, and a five-show benefit for Los Angeles firemen and wildfire victims in 2008. These short-term commitments gave the impression of a performer eager to get back onstage, and in October 2009, Brooks revealed that he was ending his retirement and beginning a lengthy run at a Las Vegas casino.

Brooks’ work was firmly within country music bounds, but he was highly influenced by the 70s-era rock of Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, and the operatic rock of Queen and Freddie Mercury. For his live performances, Brooks would employ a wireless headset microphone. It was a breath of fresh air from the usual ho-hum country concert experience, thanks to the additional vigour and arena-rock spectacle.

The Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts both welcomed Sevens at No. 1. After its release, Brooks went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide. Included on the CD was a duet called “In Another’s Eyes,” which Trisha Yearwood sang. A second-place finish on the Hot Country Songs chart was a feat it accomplished. With Steve Wariner’s help, the album’s lead hit, “Longneck Bottle,” topped the charts. The album spawned two additional top-charting singles, “Two Pina Coladas” and “To Make You Feel My Love.” Cover versions of these songs by Bob Dylan also made it into the top 10 on the charts for Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks. Hope Floats featured them on the film’s soundtrack. The 1998 release of Double Live was Brooks’ debut live album. Several gigs during Brooks’s second global tour served as the basis for the CD.

Besides his appearances as the musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live and as Gaines in a mockumentary on VH1, Brooks has also been featured on both shows as a host. Moreover, he acted as the program’s host. Although Brooks attempted to drum up interest in both the album and the film, none were successful. A few short weeks after its debut, the Gaines project imploded. Most Americans didn’t understand or appreciate Brooks’ attempt to represent a rock star. The album did well enough to debut at #2, but it was hardly a smash hit. Although the album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, its performance fell short of expectations.
