Elon Musk

Musk’s birthday is June 28th, and he was born in Pretoria, South Africa. His mom’s full name is Maye Musk. From Saskatchewan in Canada, she works as both a nutritionist and a model. His father’s name is also Errol Musk. His father is an electromechanical engineer, pilot, sailor, consultant, and real estate developer in South Africa. There are two younger members of his family: his brother Kimbal and sister Tosca. Musk’s maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, is a Canadian-American of American and Canadian ancestry; he also has British and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. Following his parents’ 1980 divorce, Musk moved in with his dad in Pretoria and abroad, a decision he came to deeply regret two years later. He has a half-sister and a half-brother on his dad’s side.

At the tender age of ten, Musk purchased a Commodore VIC-20 due to his growing interest in computers and video games. He taught himself how to code from a book and by the time he was 12 he had sold the source code for a video game he had made in BASIC to PC and Office Technology magazine for $500. Musk was tormented as a child for being shy and uncomfortable. Once, a gang of men pushed him down a flight of stairs, sending him to the hospital. Before graduating from Pretoria Boys High School, he studied at Waterkloof House Preparatory School and Bryanston High School.

Musk went to high school in Pretoria, South Africa’s capital. Musk believed that if he entered the United States through Canada, he would have an easier time. His mother was a Canadian citizen, therefore he sought to obtain a Canadian passport. While waiting for the paperwork that would exempt him from military service in South Africa, Musk spent five months as a student at the University of Pretoria. In June of 1989, Musk arrived in Canada; however, he was unable to track down his great-uncle in Montreal and instead stayed in a hostel. After that, he went to live with another uncle in Saskatchewan.

We spent a year helping out on a farm and in the lumberyard with whatever needed doing. Musk began attending Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in the year 1990. During the summer of 1994, Musk split his time between two companies in Silicon Valley: Pinnacle Research Institute, which studied electrolytic ultracapacitors for energy storage, and Rocket Science Games, based out of Palo Alto. In 1995, Musk enrolled at Stanford University to pursue a Ph.D. in materials science. Musk applied for jobs at Netscape but did not hear back from the company. He spent all of two days at Stanford before dropping out to start an Internet startup in light of the phenomenon that was then taking the world by storm.

After meeting at Queen’s University, Musk married Canadian novelist Justine Wilson. They tied the knot in 2000 but divorced four years later. Their first child, Nevada Alexander Musk, passed away at the age of 10 weeks from SIDS. Parental responsibilities for their five remaining children were divided.

Musk started dating English actress Talulah Riley back in 2008, and the two eventually tied the knot in 2010. Musk’s 2012 confirmation of his separation from Riley marks a sad chapter in both lives. It was in 2013 that Musk and Riley tied the knot again. Musk initially sought a divorce from Riley in December 2014, but he ultimately dropped the case. In 2016, there was a second divorce decree. Some say Musk pursued Amber Heard as far back as 2012, and that the two dated for several months in 2017. While Heard was still married to Johnny Depp, rumors spread that he was having an affair with Heard.

Zip2, a web-based software firm started by Musk, Kimbal, and Greg Kouri in 1995, was funded in part by angel investors. They found a small office to rent in Palo Alto and launched a business there. In addition to its regular newspaper distribution, the company also created and disseminated an online city guide complete with maps, instructions, and a yellow pages directory. Prior to the company’s profitability, Musk claims he was unable to afford an apartment and instead hired an office, slept on the sofa, showered at the YMCA, and shared a computer with his brother.

The Musk brothers were able to convince the board to forgo plans for a merger with CitySearch and sign contracts with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. Musk’s bid to unseat Rich Sorkin as chairman and CEO was unanimously shot down by the board of directors. Tesla paid Musk $22 million for a 7% stake in the company.

Musk co-founded the online financial services and email payment company X.com in 1999. Within the first several months, the company attracted more than 200 thousand new customers, making it one of the first federally insured internet banks. When investors saw Musk’s inexperience, they forced him out as CEO of Intuit and replaced him with Bill Harris at the year’s conclusion. To lessen its rivalry, X.com combined with online bank Confinity the next year. Max Levchin and Peter Thiel’s Confinity company, which offered a rival to X.com’s money transfer service (PayPal), was more successful.

Musk has been reinstated to his former position as CEO of the combined firm. Thiel resigned after a disagreement with Musk over Musk’s preference for Microsoft software over Linux. In September 2000, the board of directors replaced Musk with Thiel as a result of technical problems and a lack of a consistent marketing plan on Musk’s part. Thiel changed the company’s name to PayPal in 2001 to reflect his emphasis on that service. When eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion in equity in 2002, Musk was the company’s top shareholder and made over $100 million.

In 2017, Musk purchased the X.com domain name from PayPal for an undisclosed fee, citing sentimental importance. In 2001, Musk became a member of the Mars Society, a charitable group. He was intrigued by the idea of building a plant growth chamber on Mars and considered funding the project himself. Musk visited Moscow in October 2001 to purchase reconditioned intercontinental ballistic missiles that could launch greenhouse payloads into orbit.

While in Russia, Musk met with NPO Lavochkin and Kosmotras, but was treated like an amateur and even spat on by one of the country’s top designers. As a result, the group came back to the States empty-handed. After leaving Russia in January 2002, the gang came back in February to try to acquire three intercontinental ballistic missiles. Musk paid Kosmotras another visit and was offered a rocket to the tune of $8 million, which he politely declined. Musk’s alternative plan was to start a company that would produce low-cost rockets. Musk used his yearly earnings of $100 million to launch Space Exploration Technologies Corp., better known as SpaceX, in May 2002. Since 2021, he has also held the position of Chief Engineer in addition to CEO.

After three unsuccessful attempts, SpaceX successfully launched Falcon 1 in 2008. To my knowledge, this was the first privately funded mission to the ISS using a rocket powered by liquid propellant. After the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, NASA granted SpaceX a $1.6 billion contract to replace the Space Shuttle by launching 12 Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station. The commercial sector made history in 2012 when the Dragon spacecraft docked with the ISS. In 2015, SpaceX successfully recovered the first stage of a Falcon 9 rocket, moving the business closer to its goal of manufacturing reusable rockets. Recovery operations were eventually moved to a drone ship functioning as an autonomous spaceport out on the ocean, where they continue to this day.

The first two experimental satellites were put into orbit in February 2018. It all started in May of 2019 with the launch of the first 60 operational satellites, which marked the commencement of the second series of test satellites and the first major deployment of a portion of the constellation. In July 2003, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning created Tesla, Inc., formerly known as Tesla Motors, and funded the company until the Series A round of financing. Before Musk joined the team, the two guys played crucial roles in the establishment of the business. Musk directed the development of the Roadster product and was otherwise involved in the company, although he did not handle day-to-day operations. Eberhard was fired from the corporation in 2007 after a series of increasing clashes and the 2008 financial crisis. Musk assumed the role of CEO and chief product architect in 2008 at the firm.

In 2008, Tesla unveiled the Roadster, their first electric sports automobile. Approximately 2,500 units were sold, making it the first mass-produced, all-electric car powered entirely by lithium-ion battery cells. Tesla started shipping the Model S four-door sedan in 2012, and then the Model X crossover in 2015. The Model 3, Tesla’s first vehicle aimed at the mass market, was released that same year. As of March 2020, more than 500,000 had been shipped, making it the world’s most widely distributed electric vehicle. The Model Y crossover was introduced in 2020 as the fifth car.

In 2006, Musk, his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive, and Musk himself launched SolarCity. Musk was responsible for the company’s initial concept and funding. When it comes to installing solar energy systems in the United States, SolarCity ranked second in 2013. In 2014, Musk proposed that SolarCity build a manufacturing facility south of Buffalo, New York, that would be three times larger than the largest solar factory in the US. The manufacturing facility was built between 2014 and 2017. When Panasonic decided to pull out of the partnership at the beginning of 2020, it was a joint venture.

Musk has long been an opponent of short-selling, and he has called for it to be banned. One possible explanation for Musk’s anti-short-selling stance is that short-sellers routinely coordinate and disseminate opposition information on firms they believe are currently overpriced. In early 2021, he suggested a short squeeze at GameStop. Musk has also shown a consistent preference for cryptocurrency over government-issued fiat currency by publicly supporting it. Critics like Nouriel Roubini have called his opinions on cryptocurrencies a manipulation of the market because of the way they have influenced the price of these assets after they were tweeted out.
