Von Teese was the second of three girls born in Rochester, Michigan. “It’s a cosmos apart from the colored klieg lights of Hollywood and Paris,” she adds of her homeland. However, on weekend afternoons, my mother and I had a front-row seat on a rocket ship to those distant worlds via old films starring the most glamorous creatures imaginable – Betty Grable, Mae West, Carmen Miranda, Marlene Dietrich… They were our muses.” Her father worked as a machinist, while her mother worked as a manicurist.

She is descended from English, Scots, Armenian, and German ancestors. According to Von Teese, one of her grandparents was half-Armenian and adopted into an Anglo-Saxon American household. Von Teese is well-known for her obsession with 1940s cinema and vintage fashion. This began at a young age and was encouraged by her mother, who would purchase dress-up costumes for her daughter.

Von Teese gained an interest in the women of that era, particularly Betty Grable, from her mother, who was a devotee of classic, Golden Age-era Hollywood films. From an early age, she was classically trained as a ballet dancer and performed solo for a local ballet company at the age of 13. Though she initially desired a career as a ballerina, Von Teese asserts that “by the age of 15, I was as good as I would ever be.”

Later, she would add this element into her burlesque performances, in which she frequently performs en pointe. When her father’s job transferred from Michigan to Orange County, California, the family migrated. Von Teese completed his high school education at University High School in Irvine, California. When Von Teese was a teenager, her mother went shopping for her first bra, which was made entirely of plain white cotton.

She also received a plastic egg containing a pair of wrinkled, flesh-colored pantyhose. Von Teese expresses disappointment, stating that she had hoped to receive lovely lacy clothes and stockings similar to those she had seen in her father’s Playboy publications. This sparked her interest in underwear. When she was 15, she worked as a salesgirl and later as a buyer in a lingerie store.

Von Teese has a long history of wearing intricate lingerie, including corsets and basques with fully fashioned stockings. Von Teese studied historical costuming in college and aspired to work as a film stylist. She is a trained costume designer who frequently designs (and copyrights) her own picture shootings. Von Teese had her now-famous beauty mark tattooed on her left cheek when she was 18.

In her debut book, she describes her first visit to a strip club at the age of 19, when she was quickly employed alongside her job at a beauty counter. She was taken aback by the lack of creativity displayed by other strippers and desired to add vintage and fetish style into her performance. Von Teese is a Pilates and dressage enthusiast. Her Hollywood Hills Tudor revival mansion is dedicated to early twentieth-century décor, featuring antique taxidermy, a pub, and a glass cabinet containing Bettie Page’s vintage fetish shoes.

Von Teese’s home is devoid of white walls, which she claims she is scared of. Additionally, she has a room devoted to shoes. She is a vintage china collector, particularly egg cups and tea sets, and a vintage vehicle enthusiast. She owned a 1939 Chrysler New Yorker, among other vintage automobiles, from 1997 to December 2010. “I love to surround myself with beautiful ordinary objects,” she explains.

I present my home-baked petit fours on porcelain pedestals and sip tea from flowery teacups that I scoured flea markets for. I store cosmetic brushes in old vases modeled after ladies’ heads complete with glamorous dos and makeup. I always carry a fairly tiny, possibly one that I picked up on eBay for next to nothing.” Von Teese began dating French Count Louis-Marie de Castelbajac in 2009, following the dissolution of her marriage to Marilyn Manson in 2007.

She briefly dated singer Theo Hutchcraft in 2012. Since 2014, Von Teese has been dating graphic designer Adam Rajcevich. Among Von Teese’s notable pals are Christian Louboutin, who makes shoes for her shows, Catherine D’lish, a burlesque performer and dressmaker, and Liz Goldwyn, a writer Von Teese selected the stage name Dita in honor of silent film actress Dita Parlo. She was forced to have a surname for her breakout December 2002 Playboy cover, so she got Von Treese from the phonebook. Playboy misspelled it Von Teese, which she eventually adopted.

“I have my own look and I’m sticking to it,” she explains. “It’s the look that is 100 percent me and 100 percent made by me.” I could be a one-trick pony. However, that is a fairly good trick!” Von Teese has appeared in both mainstream and pornographic films. In her early years, she appeared in fetish-themed, softcore pornographic films such as Romancing Sara and Matter of Trust (where she is credited as Heather Sweet), as well as two Andrew Blake hard-core fetish flicks, Pin-Ups 2 and Decadence.

She also starred in Thirty Seconds to Mars’ 2013 music video for “Up in the Air.” In 2007, she commented, “I don’t understand why women feel compelled to enter the performing business as soon as they get celebrity… However, if the portion was aesthetically pleasing, I think I could consider it.

Von Teese guest featured in the CBS police procedural drama series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in the episode “A Kiss Before Frying” in January 2011. In a film noir-inspired scenario, she plays Rita von Squeeze, a femme fatale version of herself who seduces Szmanda’s character, Greg Sanders. Von Teese appears as Beetroot in the British adaptation of the Fox television series The Masked Dancer in 2021.

She became the third celebrity to be unmasked on May 31, 2021. Von Teese competed in the eleventh season of Danse Avec Les stars, the French version of Dancing with the Stars, in September 2021. Von Teese has been featured on numerous best-dressed lists and is a frequent front-row attendee at fashion shows, most notably Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Marc Jacobs, all of which she frequently wears.

Von Teese has stated of her admiration for Gaultier, “Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Vivienne Westwood were the first designers who made a lasting impression on me.” Jean-Paul shares many of my passions, such as corsetry, ballet-peach satins and silks, black silk velvet, bullet bras, and girdles.

When I was a teenager, I would hunt for 1930s peach satin lingerie pieces to emulate his style on a budget, as I could not buy his items at the time. Meeting him and becoming friends with him was a dream come true. I met him for the first time when shooting my first fashion editorial for Flaunt magazine, which was a massive story including me wearing the most essential pieces from his haute couture archives, which was a dream

In 2005, she walked the Autumn/Winter Ready-to-Wear runway show in Paris for Giambattista Valli, a former Ungaro designer. Von Teese appeared on the runway during Milan Fashion Week 2006, opening for the Moschino diffusion label, Moschino Cheap & Chic, autumn/winter 2006/7 show. In 2007, she had two appearances in the Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture show at Paris Fashion Week, and she made another appearance in 2014.

She has been in a number of commercials. She starred in advertisements for Vivienne Westwood’s spring/summer 2005 collection and was named the face of the Australian clothing label “Wheels and Dollbaby” for their 2006/7 Spring/Summer advertising campaign. She served as an ambassador/spokesmodel for HIV/AIDS awareness when she was chosen (along with Eve, Debbie Harry, and Lisa Marie Presley) for MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam VI campaign (a collection of lipsticks and lipglosses with 100% of proceeds benefiting global AIDS charities and raising awareness about HIV/AIDS).

Von Teese has been featured in Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, and practically every international fashion publication. Von Teese has stated that she never employs the services of a stylist. “When I engaged a stylist for the first time, they picked up a pair of my 1940s shoes and remarked, ‘These would look wonderful with jeans.’ ‘You’re out. Von Teese’s distinctive style was “influenced by quirky women such as Luisa Casati, Anna Piaggi, and Isabella Blow.” Additionally, she states that “doing things yourself is a question of honesty and pride.”

I’m looking forward to exiting the world and candidly declaring, “Yes, I did this.” I adore the assurance it instills in me. Otherwise, I would feel deceived. The truth is that doing it oneself takes less time [than hiring a stylist]. Additionally, it is significantly more enjoyable! Why would I deprive myself of such unadulterated pleasure?”

One of Von Teese’s signature pieces is the garter belt, which features six garters rather than the traditional four, with two at the front, side seams, and back. Von Teese began collaborating with Australian department store Myer in 2014 on a lingerie range headlined by Australian model Stefania Ferrario. Von Teese participated in Jean Paul Gaultier’s final couture fashion show in Paris on January 22, 2020.
