Nearly 300 locals honored those who provided lifesaving treatment during the return of Hearts and Heroes in Cabarrus County. Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors were reunited with the onlookers, medical professionals, and first responders who conducted lifesaving interventions, filling the Laureate Center at Kannapolis City Hall with gratitude, joy, and music. After a two-year break due to the COVID pandemic, Thursday’s party served as a poignant reminder of the value of genuine human connection.
Twenty-one achievements from 2022 were honored during the event, a joint effort between Atrium Health Cabarrus and Cabarrus County Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Daniel Truhitte, a local celebrity, was the subject of one of these tales. Truhitte played the role of Rolf in the 1965 film adaptation of “The Sound of Music.”
In June of 2022, Truhitte and his wife Tarealia went to Concord, New Hampshire, to pay their respects at the funeral of a mutual acquaintance at Forest Hill United Methodist Church. Truhitte had cardiac arrest shortly after paramedics arrived. Pamela Petrea, a veteran nurse, was present. She was filling in as organist for the funeral ceremony. Petrea discovered an issue with one of the organ keys as she arrived and started her warmup. She approached a piano set up in front of the congregation’s seats. That, she added in the clip, was the second miracle.
Petrea had a good vantage point from the piano as the Truhittes entered the holy space. She gave the two an amicable grin. The smiling woman caught Daniel Truhitte’s eye, and he turned to his wife to see whether they were acquainted. Tarealia felt the pianist was familiar with Daniel since they had probably performed together. After settling into their usual place, Daniel briefly turned to his wife. “I’m dizzy,” he said. “I have a feeling that…”
Petrea realized right away that something wasn’t right. She hastily untied Truhitte’s tie and checked for a pulse in their pew. Nothing. She and the others helped lay him on the hard bench (there were no cushions, which Petrea knew would assist in compressions) and began working on him. Emergency personnel came and took control. Atrium Health Cabarrus was where Truhitte became better in the end.
Despite their frequent phone conversations, Truhitte and Petrea had not seen each other in person for months before the occurrence. Both are talented musicians, so they sang an inspiring version of “How Great Thou Art.” The applause became louder as the evening progressed, and more “hearts” and “heroes” came to the stage. Since the cardiac arrest, several of them hadn’t seen each other in a while.
Everyone has a beating heart. A hero exists inside everyone. All around us are courageous people whose hearts are still beating due to several gestures of love. We honor the spouses, wives, parents, coworkers, random bystanders, medical professionals, and emergency responders who were there when it mattered most.
