The Chicago Cubs, commonly known as the Cubbies and the North Siders, are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois, and playing their home games at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are among the most beloved teams in baseball despite their lack of success on the field. The National League Cubs is a three-time World Series champion team.

The Chicago White Stockings, as they were first known, became an instant success after joining the National League in 1876. With Cap Anson at the helm, the team dominated the National League, winning six of the first eleven titles. The squad was known as the Colts and the Orphans before adopting the name Cubs in 1903. The 1906 season was the Cubs’ finest ever, as they won 116 games and had a.763 winning percentage despite losing the World Series to their bitter rivals, the Chicago White Sox. But the Cubs were the first club to win consecutive World Series, doing so in 1907 and 1908.

Weeghman Park was the new home of the Cubs until 1926 when it was renamed Wrigley Field and is now the second-oldest baseball stadium in continuous use. The 1910s and 1920s were a rather successful period for the squad, with two National League championships. Because of the efforts of players like center fielder Hack Wilson, catcher Gabby Hartnett, and second baseman Rogers Hornsby, the Cubs dominated the National League and won four championships between 1929 and 1938. Babe Ruth’s “called shot,” in which he purportedly pointed to center field before hitting a home run there in Game 7 of the 1932 World Series, is one of baseball’s most famous moments.

Since 1945, the Chicago Cubs have mainly been remembered for spectacular failure.  A ground ball that got between first baseman Leon Durham’s legs in the deciding game of the 1984 NLCS between the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres cost the Cubs a chance to end their long wait for a World Series appearance.

In 2003, with a 3-2 lead over the Florida Marlins in the National League Championship Series, it appeared that the Cubs were headed back to the World Series for the second time in franchise history. Fan interference prevented outfielder Moises Alou from making a catch on a pop foul near the seats, costing the Cubs a potential out and a trip to the World Series. Both the game and the series went against the Cubs.

Despite all of these setbacks, in 2008 the Cubs became only the second team in Major League Baseball history to win 10,000 games. In 2007 and 2008, the Cubs won the NL Central Division titles for the first time in 100 years thanks to the efforts of manager Lou Piniella, first baseman Derrek Lee, third baseman Aramis Ramirez, outfielder Alfonso Soriano, catcher Geovany Soto (who was named Rookie of the Year in 2008), and pitchers Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, and Ted Lilly. The Cubs enjoyed a successful season in 2009 but failed to make the playoffs, and they have been losing consistently since then.

The organization hired Theo Epstein as general manager in 2011 since he was responsible for assembling the Boston Red Sox team that finally broke their 86-year championship drought in 2004. Epstein stocked the Cubs with promising young players like third baseman Kris Bryant and first baseman Anthony Rizzo, and the team surprised everyone by making a surprising run to the postseason in 2015. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the National League Championship Series by the Mets. The next season, the squad won 103 games, the most in over a century, and easily won their division.

The Cubs staged a remarkable comeback in the playoffs to win the National League Championship Series and earn the franchise’s first trip to the World Series since 1945. There, down 3-1 in the series to the Cleveland Indians, the Cubs won three straight to win the World Series and bring home the franchise’s first championship in 108 years. For the first time in franchise history, the Cubs made it to the National League Championship Series, where they were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers. After a franchise-record regular season, Chicago made the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year in 2018, however, their run was cut short by a loss in the Wild Card Game.

The Cubs’ decline continued in 2019, as seen by theirs.424 winning percentage and their elimination from postseason contention following a streak of five straight one-run losses in the season’s final weeks. The Cubs made it back to the postseason in the truncated 2020 season caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, although they were eliminated in the Wild Card stage this time. This offseason, Epstein decided to leave the team. Even though the Cubs started the 2021 season strong, they went on a skid that ultimately cost them a playoff berth and led to the trade of several key players, including Rizzo and Bryant.

In the United States, professional baseball’s National League has been around the longest of all major leagues. Founded in 1876 as the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs when the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players collapsed, the league changed its name twice before finally settling on its current moniker in 1903. Beginning with the American Association in the years 1882–1891, several other leagues attempted to unseat the National League from its perch atop professional sports. Only the American League, founded in 1900, has endured to the present day.

Every year since 1903, the National and American League winners have met in the World Series to determine the MLB champion. There are 15 clubs in the National League, and they are split across three levels. The National League East consists of the following teams: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Washington Nationals. The National League Central includes the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants are the National League West’s five teams.

Schmidt was chosen by the Phillies in 1971 after he played collegiate baseball at an Ohio university. He had been with their minor league squad and in 1972 he was promoted to the big leagues. Early in his career, he had trouble getting hits, but by 1974, he was leading the league in home runs and showing some consistency at the plate. Schmidt hit 48 home runs in 1980, which was then a record for a third baseman. He finished his 18-year career ranked seventh all-time with 548 home runs and 1,595 RBI after eight times leading the National League in home runs.

Originally from Texas, Clemens attended the University of Texas and played baseball for the Longhorns before being drafted by the Red Sox in 1983. Clemens had only one year in the minors before breaking into the majors in 1984. In 1986, he led the league in earned run average with 2.48 and helped the Red Sox win the American League pennant with a 24-4 record. A pitcher is not often honored with both the Cy Young and the AL MVP awards, but that’s exactly what happened to him. While playing with the Red Sox, Clemens won two more Cy Young Awards.

Former U.S. senator George J. Mitchell released a study on steroid use in baseball in December 2007. Clemens was featured heavily in the report. The article claimed that Clemens used steroids during the 1998, 2000, and 2001 baseball seasons; Clemens refuted the claims. Federal prosecutors accused him of perjury and making false statements to Congress in 2010 for allegedly lying before a House of Representatives committee in 2008 when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. The trial against Clemens in 2011 ended in a mistrial, but the following year he stood trial once more and was acquitted of all counts.

Mays comes from a family of baseball players; both his dad and granddad played the game. When he was 16, right-handed hitter and right-handed fielder Willie Mays joined the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League to play semiprofessional baseball on Sundays during the school year. When he graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School in 1950, the National League’s New York Giants bought out his contract with the Barons.

Mays joined the Giants in 1951 after two years in the minor leagues, and he immediately became one of baseball’s all-time great players by winning Rookie of the Year that year. The Giants had fallen considerably behind the Brooklyn Dodgers in the pennant chase. The great play of Mays and others helped the Giants tie the Dodgers in the standings on the final day of the season, setting up a best-of-three playoff for the National League title, which the Giants ultimately won thanks to Bobby Thomson’s home run, which became known as “the shot heard ’round the world.”

After he retired from playing, Mays worked with the Mets as a public relations consultant and assistant coach. Three months after being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 1979, Mays was barred from all baseball-related activities after accepting a public relations job with a corporation that was involved in gambling concerns. The Giants hired Mays as a full-time special assistant in 1986 after lifting their suspension in 1985. Say Hey is his co-authored autobiography with Lou Sahadi. Mays received the Medal of Freedom from the president in 2015.

Glavine spent his childhood in Massachusetts, where he developed a love for both ice hockey and baseball. As a senior in high school, he was recognized as the best hockey player in the Boston area. The Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League picked him, and the University of Lowell in Massachusetts offered him a hockey scholarship to play for their team. He was picked by the National League’s Atlanta Braves in 1984 and, seeing that baseball offered him a better chance at longevity than hockey, he made the switch.
