In 1947, business executive Hershel Smith and police officer Al Shea met together at Smith’s house in Buffalo, New York with the intention of starting a barbershop quartet. Vern Reed, a tenor, was brought on as an executive for a boys’ club, while Bill Spangenberg, a bass, was brought on as a truck driver for a steel firm. The quartet had some success in competitions where they entered. Because of Smith’s promotion and relocation to Madison, Wisconsin, the group broke up not long after that. If they hadn’t regrouped, barbershop harmony as we know it today may seem very different.

Even yet, Shea and Reed were adamant about moving forward, so they sought out baritone Dick Grapes. The quartet’s star swiftly rose to the top, and by 1950 they had won a national competition and amassed a sizeable following. They played a lot of shows and recorded some albums throughout the subsequent years.

To perform in his new musical, “The Music Man,” written by Meredith Willson that year, a quartet was needed. The production will launch on Broadway, and the Bills were the ones to win the tryout. For this reason, the foursome had to uproot their lives and go to New York. After much consideration, Grapes opted to remain in Buffalo and continue working. Baritone Wayne “Scotty” Ward, who has performed in barbershop quartets for decades, has taken his place. Averaging eight performances each week, Reed, Shea, Ward, and Spangenberg garnered a total of 1,375 performances and five Tony Awards. The Bills also made appearances on a number of popular 1950s New York-based television programs, such as The Perry Como Show and The Arthur Godfrey Show. The group also set a number of new benchmarks.

There was a film version of the musical that starred in the same four Bills in 1962. Spangenberg fell ill soon after filming wrapped and had to leave the group. Jim Jones, a bass player, took his place. In 1963, Spangenberg passed away.

The Buffalo Bills played in far over six thousand games. One could argue that they are the best barbershop quartet ever. Their original sound became a benchmark for all subsequent quartets. No other barbershop quartet is likely to ever achieve the same level of fame as them. After hearing the Buffalo Bills’ recordings, “The Music Man” creator Meredith Willson invited them to try out for the Broadway production. Cast members had to uproot their lives and relocate to New York for the duration of the show’s run.

In the five years following the release of The Music Man, the group remained together. In 1967, they called it quits after performing at New York’s posh Waldorf-Astoria Hotel for their final show. The band, in its different incarnations, has played for troops stationed in France, Germany, Austria, Japan, and Korea.

Over the years, the group’s membership changed frequently. Al Shea, Vern Reed, Wayne Ward, and Bill Spangenberg made up the foursome that appeared in both the original Broadway production and the 1962 film adaptation of The Music Man.
In 1947, a four-person group in Buffalo, New York, began performing for local organizations under a guise other than their given names. When they were first introduced to an audience during one performance, they were dubbed the “Buffalo Bills,” and the moniker stuck.
Bassist Dale Jones filled in for Spangenburg for a few months after he was forced to resign due to illness, and then Jim Jones took over for the rest of the band’s career.

William Frederick Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill, was an American buffalo hunter, U.S. Army scout, Pony Express rider, Indian fighter, actor, and impresario who popularized the American West through melodrama and fiction. He was born on February 26, 1846, in Scott county, Iowa, and died on January 10, 1917, in Denver, Colorado. Buffalo Bill was one of the first global celebrities after his colorful Wild West show, which eventually became known as Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World, and became an international institution.

Isaac Cody uprooted his family from their Mississippi River farm in LeClaire, Iowa, and settled them in Kansas, not far from the Kickapoo Indian Agency. There was a bloody conflict in Kansas at the time between proponents of slavery and those who opposed it. Isaac was stabbed in 1852 while giving an anti-slavery lecture and died three years later, in 1857.

By the time he was nine years old, Cody was already putting his skills as a horseman to use for his family’s livelihood at the Russell, Majors, and Waddell freight company. After killing a Native American who was aiding an attack on the cattle drive Cody was working on in 1857, he became known as the youngest Indian warrior on the Great Plains. While on a cattle drive together, Cody and a much older man got into a brawl, and the youthful Wild Bill Hickok stepped in to help.

Cody’s allegation in his book that he had done so is verified in print by Russell, Majors, and Waddell’s Alexander Majors, although his name does not appear in the official records of the Pony Express. At 14, Cody joined the Pony Express in the spring of 1860 and was given a short 45-mile (70-km) run because he had already conveyed messages between wagon trains for Russell, Majors, and Waddell. There is no denying the bravery and dedication Cody demonstrated while serving with the Pony Express, even if some of his feats as a rider were the inventions of publicity agents. One notable ride was Cody’s epic, 22-hour nonstop journey from Red Butte Station in Wyoming to Pacific Springs Station in California, a distance of around 300 miles.

Another time, Cody was on a legendary ride when he outran a group of Sioux warriors and arrived at Three Crossings Station in Wyoming, only to discover that the station keeper had been murdered and all of the horses had been taken. He made a precarious escape to the next station, but once there he rallied the troops and surprised the Indians in their camp, retaking the stolen horses. In another famous tale, Cody was asked to deliver a big sum of money but was afraid he might be robbed on the way, so he hid the money under his saddle blanket and secreted paper bills in his Pony Express mochila. When he was finally robbed at gunpoint, he tossed the empty mochila at the robbers and ran away.

First serving as a Union scout against the Kiowa and Comanche, Cody later enlisted with the Seventh Kansas Cavalry in 1863 and saw duty in Missouri and Tennessee during the American Civil War. Following the war, he served as a civilian scout and despatch bearer for the United States Army at Fort Ellsworth in Kansas. He went buffalo hunting in 1867 and 1868 to supply the workers building the Union Pacific Railroad with meat. He is reported to have killed 4,280 buffalo during this time, earning him the title of “champion buffalo killer” in the Great Plains.

Even though he needed help getting on his horse backstage, Buffalo Bill remained to perform in his Wild West show until 1916. Although Buffalo Bill’s performance continued to be a huge hit both at home and abroad, he eventually went bankrupt due to bad investments, such as buying an unprofitable gold mine. The final time he was seen in public was only two months before he passed away.

The Wild West performance is a theatrical spectacular that was started by William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody in 1883. In order to fund his own Wild West performance, Indian scout and folk hero Buffalo Bill Cody turned to act. In 1887, he put on a show at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, featuring a cast of one hundred Indians, the sharpshooter Annie Oakley, other trick riders, ropers, and shooters, and a variety of exotic creatures like buffalo, elk, bear, moose, and deer.

Medal of Honor, officially known as the Congressional Medal of Honor, is the highest military honor bestowed by the United States. It was established by Congress in 1861 for the Navy and in 1862 for the Army and was formerly given only to enlisted men until being extended to officers as well. It’s for “extraordinary heroism” that puts one’s life in danger but is “above and beyond the call of duty.” Although the Navy Medal has only been awarded for combat valor since 1942, prior to that year it could have been given for noncombatant reasons such as lifesaving.

The medal hangs from a blue ribbon with a white star pad in the middle. An eagle perches on a bar that reads “Valor” and is topped with a bronze star that features the head of Minerva. The recipient’s name and the words “The Congress to” appear on the bar’s flip side. The ship’s emblem shows a star dangling from an anchor, with Minerva driving away Discord from its center. The star in the Air Force emblem represents freedom and is suspended from a thunderbolt that has the word “Valor” on its bar.
