When Hamilton wanted to go surfing on Kauai, he headed to Makua (Tunnels) Beach on the 31st of October, 2003. A 14-foot (4.3-meter) tiger shark ambushed her as she paddled out on her surfboard. Just below the shoulder, it bit off her left arm. Hamilton was rushed to the hospital after being found by his friends. She underwent multiple surgeries and lost more than half of her blood supply. Somehow, a month later, she was back in the water, surfing again. The following year, she was back in the competition circuit. After losing a limb, she adapted her strategy accordingly. Two years after winning a national surfing title in 2005, she became pro.

The publication of biographies and the production of films based on her life both contributed to Hamilton’s rising stardom. In 2004, she wrote and released Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. It was co-written by Sheryl Berk and Rick Bundschuh and details Hamilton’s struggle to recover from a devastating surfing loss and return to the top of her game.
