Ben Platt

On September 24, 1993, in Los Angeles County, California, Benjamin Schiff Platt entered the world. He is the only actor among the five children of Julie (née Beren) and Marc Platt. His father was a film, TV, and theater producer who worked on projects like Legally Blonde, Into the Woods, La La Land, Mary Poppins Returns, and the musical Wicked. He and his family have strong religious ties to Judaism.

While attending Adderley School for the Performing Arts in Pacific Palisades, he was in musicals like “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Into the Woods.” Platt completed his high school education at Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles, California, and graduated in June 2011. After seven weeks, he left Columbia University in New York to devote himself full-time to his Book of Mormon mission. While he was at Columbia, he sang in the Cappella group Nonsequitur.

At the young age of nine, Platt appeared in a production of The Music Man at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Kristin Chenoweth. He made his Broadway debut in a touring production of Caroline, or Change by Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner when he was just 11 years old. He played Jean Valjean in a Kidz Theater performance of “Les Misérables” when he was only 17 years old. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical was another of my earliest roles, and I played Claude Bukowski in it at Columbia University.

Not only that, but he also took part in a workshop production of Alice by Heart, a modern take on the Alice in Wonderland story written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. Platt played Elder Arnold Cunningham in a 2012 Chicago production of The Book of Mormon. The previews began on December 2, 2012, and the show’s opening night performance occurred on December 19, 2012.

The critically acclaimed series finale aired on October 6, 2013. Platt “goes into this part with the zest of youth,” as one Chicago reviewer put it. Between January 7th, 2014 through January 6th, 2015, Platt was back on Broadway as Elder Cunningham at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

I assisted with film production and the musical Dear Evan Hansen between 2015 and 2017. Platt was a featured performer in the 2012 musical comedy Pitch Perfect, which was inspired by the nonfiction book Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory. Platt featured Anna Kendrick, Skyler Astin, Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine, Anna Camp, and Brittany Snow in the film as the magic-obsessed Benji Applebaum. The following year, he was recognized for his work in the film industry with a nomination for the Teen Choice Awards Choice Movie—Male Scene Stealer category.

In Pitch Perfect 2, released in 2015, Platt returned to his role as Benji Applebaum. Since then, he has acted in a variety of films, including the critically acclaimed Ricki and the Flash and the critically acclaimed Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. In the 2015 world premiere of the musical Dear Evan Hansen at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC, Platt originated the role of Evan Hansen. The show aired from July 9th, 2015, to August 23rd, 2015. With Platt’s help, the musical received such rave reviews that it was moved off-Broadway.

On New York’s Second Stage in 2016, Platt was back as Evan Hansen. On March 26, 2016, a full month before the show’s official debut on May 1, 2016, Platt and the cast began preview performances. On May 26, 2016, Platt closed out his limited engagement to sold-out crowds.

In the winter of 2016, Ben Platt Platt made his Broadway debut at the Music Box Theatre in the title role of Dear Evan Hansen. He received praise for his work, calling it “historic” and calling his performance one of the best by a male lead in a musical. Platt won the Tony Award for Best Performer in a Leading Role in a Musical at the age of 23, making him the youngest actor to do so. After his last concert on November 19, 2017, Platt announced his retirement. Both the debut album and The Politician will be made available to fans between 2017 and 2020.

On March 19, 2018, it was announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, will be working with Platt as a producer. As Elder Cunningham in the “Book of Mormon” musical, she was only 19 years old. Zac Efron’s inclusion on TIME’s list of the 100 most influential individuals can be attributed in part to the thoughtfulness of his tribute.

Platt mentioned his experience playing Sky Masterson in a Hebrew-only performance of “Guys and Dolls” at Camp Ramah while on the set of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” In addition to being Courtney Platt’s brother-in-law, he is also a political ally (2019). Miranda and other speakers addressed the crowd on March 24 in Washington, DC. Platt appeared opposite Damian Lewis, Nina Dobrev, and Mena Massoud in the historical thriller Run This Town, directed by Rob Ford.

Some fans were offended by the choice to cast Platt because they believed the film had plagiarized the concepts of female journalist Robyn Doolittle. Platt, Lola Kirke, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alphonso McAuley, and Lynda Boyd will be in the indie drama Broken Diamonds. After having its world premiere at the 2021 Santa Barbara International Film Festival on April 1, it will have its U.S. premiere on July 23.

Many people who saw the film’s first trailer on May 18, 2021, voiced their opinion that 27-year-old Platt seemed too old to be playing a high school student. Platt, on the other hand, dismissed the criticism by drawing parallels to the high school students portrayed by the cast in the 1978 picture Grease.

The casting decision drew additional criticism as claims of partiality surfaced on August 8, 2021. In an interview on YouTube, Platt blamed the negative reception on people who were unaware that he had written the piece and refined it over the course of three years in workshops. There’s just no way they’d keep shooting without me. Because of this, I’ve felt compelled to tweet “F you, folks” as a kind of self-defense. There’s no way you can fathom the significance of my contribution to making this a reality.

That obviously isn’t the complete situation, and my opinion isn’t warranted here. Cast aside my opinion; the outcomes should be considered. Amazon Studios surprised everyone by revealing the film’s production and its casting on July 8, 2021.
