The team from Baltimore, Maryland competes in the NFL’s American Football Conference. Even though they are a relatively new team, the Ravens have already won two Super Bowls.

The Ravens were founded in 1996 after former Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell agreed to move his storied franchise to Baltimore. The new team, now known as the Ravens, was considered a resident expansion franchise because Cleveland retained the rights to the Browns’ name, history, and colors for a future replacement team. The Ravens’ first draft pick was linebacker Ray Lewis, who went on to become one of the most formidable players in the NFL and paved the way for the team’s reputation as a ferocious defensive unit.

The year 2000 was the first time in four years that the Ravens had a winning record. Its top-ranked defense helped the squad reach a 12–2 regular season record and a perfect record in the AFC playoffs when they allowed an astoundingly low 6.0 points per game. A year later, in January of Super Bowl XXXV, the Ravens handily beat the New York Giants, and Lewis was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player.

The Super Bowl-winning Ravens team also included stars like Jonathan Ogden and Shannon Sharpe on the offensive line, and Rod Woodson and Jimmy Smith on the defense. In the remaining years of the decade, the Ravens were consistently competitive, as evidenced by their six appearances in the playoffs during that span and by their defense’s placement within the top five in total yards allowed during six of those seasons.

The 2011 season was more of the same for the Ravens, as they won their division and reached the AFC championship game again, where they were narrowly defeated by the New England Patriots. After beating the Patriots again in the AFC Championship Game the next year, the Ravens went on to win their second Super Bowl that year, this time against the San Francisco 49ers. Since 2008, the Ravens have made the playoffs every year until 2013. However, they failed to make the cut in 2013.

They made it back to the playoffs the following season, where they shocked the Steelers in their opening playoff game before being defeated in the divisional round. Injuries plagued the Ravens during the 2015 season, contributing to their decline to a 5-11 record. The 2016 season marked a slight improvement for the Ravens, as they finished 8-8 and came up short of a division title. The 2018 season saw the team’s return to the postseason after a three-year absence. The Ravens, led by second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson, dominated the NFL in 2019 thanks to a dynamic offensive plan that resulted in an NFL record of 3,296 running yards and a 14-2 record, the greatest in franchise history. However, in the first round of the playoffs, Baltimore was stunned by a Tennessee Titans team that finished the regular season 9-7.

Sanders excelled at multiple sports in high school, and as a result, he was given a full ride to Florida State University, where he competed in football, baseball, and track. It was as a two-time All-American in football that he initially gained widespread notoriety for his brazen demeanor. Sanders rose to prominence in the sports media quickly, but his tremendous on-field achievements were sometimes overshadowed by his braggadocio, penchant for gaudy jewelry, and self-promotion, such as his arrival in a tuxedo-attired white stretch limousine at a 1988 game against the rival University of Florida. Sanders’s arrogance didn’t deter NFL teams, though, as he was drafted fifth overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 1989.

Sanders spent most of 1989 in the minor leagues with the New York Yankees, but he got called up for 14 games over the summer. He struggled for the Yankees in 1990, hitting just.158 in 57 games before being released and later signed by the Atlanta Braves. The fast outfielder batted.304 with a league-high 14 triples in 1992, his greatest season, and helped the Braves make it to the World Series. In 1994, he was sent to the Cincinnati Reds, then in 1995, he was sent to the San Francisco Giants. Sanders did not play in 1996, but after brief appearances with the Reds in 1997 and 2001, he retired from baseball.

Sanders had a considerably more fruitful career as a professional football player, where he made an early impression with five interceptions in his rookie season, became a full-time starter in the following year, and was selected to his first of eight Pro Bowls the following year. In 1994, he signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers and helped them win Super Bowl XXIX by making six interceptions. In his first season with the Dallas Cowboys, he earned another Super Bowl victory. He stayed with the Cowboys for four more seasons before joining the Washington Redskins for the 2000 season. Sanders went into retirement for three years, then came back for two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before quitting the NFL for good in 2006.

Offensive teams avoided throwing the ball in his direction, which is why his interception totals were lower than those of most other top cornerbacks. However, some have argued that Sanders was not a complete cornerback because of his subpar tackling and run-stopping skills. Sanders, thanks to his speed and elusiveness, is remembered as one of the best kickoff and punt returners of all time. He also proved to be a useful occasional receiving option for the offense, racking up 60 receptions in his career, three of which resulted in scores. At the time of his retirement, he held the NFL record with 19 non-offensive touchdowns.

Super Bowl is the title game of the National Football League (NFL) in the United States, played annually in either January or February between the champions of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. Each year a different city plays host to the game.

When the National Football League and the American Football League merged that year, it sparked the development of a new era for the sport. Although the merger was not officially completed until 1970, the first championship game was played on January 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and was known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The Green Bay Packers of the National Football League defeated the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League 35-10 in a game that aired on two television networks but was not a sellout. Since the championship game is traditionally held in a different year than the culminating season, Roman numerals have been used to denote each Super Bowl since its inception in 1969. Super Bowl Sunday has become a de facto national holiday in the United States, with watch parties hosted all over the country at homes, bars, and restaurants. Extensive media buildup and a festival atmosphere in the host city characterize the week leading up to the game. There are extravagant rituals and performances before and during halftime.

Every Super Bowl since the first has been a huge financial success and ratings winner on television. Many Super Bowls have even ranked among the most-watched television events of all time. Ad space during the Super Bowl is the most costly of the year, with a 30-second spot going for about $4.8 million in 2016. These high-profile commercials have featured celebrities, directors, and actors, as well as cutting-edge technology, in an effort to catch the attention of the Super Bowl’s massive viewing audience. Since the 1980s, the commercials aired during the Super Bowl have received almost as much attention from the media and the general public as the game itself.

gridiron football is a kind of American football played on a specially designed field with yard lines running in a vertical formation. Gridiron football is a hybrid of rugby and soccer (association football) played in England; the main differences between the two sports are that in gridiron football players are allowed to use their hands to touch, toss, and carry the ball, and in rugby, the two teams take turns possessing the ball.

The game, which is played with 11 players on each team, was developed in North America, especially the United States, and rose to prominence as the most popular spectator sport there. Simultaneously, it expanded to include 12 players in Canada, but it was never as successful as ice hockey despite its 12-player format. The international popularity of gridiron football lags well behind that of other popular American sports like basketball and baseball. However, during the 1980s, thanks largely to the promotion of the National Football League, teams and leagues have been founded in Europe, and the sport gained some international acclaim thanks to television broadcasts.

Gridiron football’s unique place in American society may be traced back to its inception at prestigious American universities. In New Brunswick, New Jersey, on November 6, 1869, in-state rivals Princeton and Rutgers played according to rules adapted from the London Football Association, marking the first intercollegiate football game after decades of informal, student-organized games that were tolerated by faculty as an alternative to more destructive rowdiness. Columbia, Cornell, Yale, and a few other Northeastern universities adopted a soccer-style version of the game in the early 1870s, and in 1873, delegates from Princeton, Yale, and Rutgers gathered in New York City to create the Intercollegiate Football Association and adopt a standard code.

Harvard was noticeably absent, as its squad insisted on playing the “Boston Game,” a hybrid of soccer and rugby, rather than any of the other available options. Harvard’s players were first exposed to rugby in May 1874 during the second of two matches with the McGill University of Montreal. Harvard and Yale agreed to “concessionary regulations” that were mostly Harvard’s for the inaugural football game between the two schools the following year. The advantages of the rugby style were quickly recognized by both the spectators and the Yale players, setting the stage for a meeting in 1876 between representatives from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia to establish a new Intercollegiate Football Association based on rugby rules.
