Her students at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco included actor Steven Schub (lead singer of ska band The Fenwicks) and actress Teri Hatcher. On January 28, 2011, she received the American Riviera Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. In over 200 film roles and a few TV movies.

Her first big-screen role, as is so often the case, was in a forgettable film, The Great Outdoors (1988), in which she had little screen time. Her next film appearance, however, was in Milos Forman’s Valmont (1989), a film adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos’ “Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Unfortunately, de Laclos’ story had also recently served as the inspiration for a more Hollywoodized and successful film adaptation, Dangerous Liaisons (1988), which had been released the previous year, and Foreman’s treatment received little attention.

The following year, Bening co-starred with Anjelica Huston and John Cusack in Stephen Frears’ powerful, entertaining screen adaptation of Jim Thompson’s novel The Grifters (1990), earning her the first of several Academy Award nominations for her artful portrayal of a con artist.

Warren Beatty cast Bening as Virginia Hill, Bugsy Siegel’s fiery actress moll, in his Bugsy (1991), the story of Siegel’s founding of Las Vegas, based on this performance.

Although the film did not perform well, it resulted in a relationship with Beatty, which led to Bening’s pregnancy and marriage to Beatty in 1992 – it was Bening’s second marriage, as she had been separated from her first husband since 1986 but did not finalize her divorce until 1991.

The couple then worked together on the extravagant flop Love Affair (1994), but her career rebounded the following year with her role as Queen Elizabeth in the critically acclaimed 1995 production of Richard III (1995).

Since then, notable performances have included an obsessive, pushy real estate agent in American Beauty (1999) and as the eponymous character in István Szabó’s screen adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel Being Julia (2004), both of which received Oscar nominations. Roe v.

Wade had been decided by the time I was in high school, so that was also happening; girls were getting pregnant and having abortions, and this was happening in my school as well. “Game Change” was one of the books I read. If you want to relive the campaign, that book is incredible. It’s wonderful. It’s the campaign book.

It brought back all the memories of Clinton and Obama, Sarah Palin and McCain, and choosing her and John Edwards. It was an intriguing book. Everyone has a public and a private life. Everyone has a secret. Everyone has their own private, you know, agonies and joys. And that is what great drama, whether in the movies or on stage, demonstrates.

Bening has great poise and screen presence, and when she’s at her best, she can deliver a powerful performance. Although her resume frequently includes long stretches of mediocre productions before the next good part appears, it is well worth the wait when it does.

Bening and Beatty have four children. Between The Grifters (1990) and American Beauty (1998), she went nine years without receiving an Oscar nomination (1999). She is of German, English, Irish, and Welsh ancestry.

Her surname is German. As of 2014, has appeared in three films that were nominated for Best Picture Oscars: Bugsy (1991), American Beauty (1999), and The Kids Are All Right (2010). American Beauty (1999) took first place in the category.

Kathlyn Elizabeth, the oldest child, came out as transgender at the age of 14 and changed her name to Stephen Ira. In 2017, he presided over the jury for the ‘Official Competition’ at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Along with Laura Dern, Gary Cole, Jim Beaver, Christopher Sweeney, and Michael Conner Humphreys, she appeared in the theatrical play.

“If All the Sky Were Paper,” narrated by Garrett Schweighauser. She was offered $1 million for the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992), but had to turn it down due to pregnancy, so the part went to Michelle Pfeiffer.

In 1994, I quit smoking. If she has to smoke in a movie, she smokes herbal cigarettes. The film industry is difficult. It’s driven by economics, and economics is all about getting a large number of people into the theatre.

I think where I’ve instinctively found myself is that I’m somewhat guarded in my public life. I have a certain reserve when being interviewed, photographed, or simply in the spotlight.  At least, I like to think that nothing is held back when I’m in front of a camera. That’s my responsibility.

[on working with Michel Hazanavicius on The Search (2014)] Of course, I was familiar with The Artist (2011), which was filmed in Los Angeles. It’s an excellent film. When I found out the director was working on such a unique project, I was very impressed. Michel was very brave to devote so much time to such a project.

Michel is direct and unpretentious. It’s very simple to communicate with him, as it is with Bérénice [Bejo]. Both are professionals who, like me, enjoy a good time. Even in the most serious situations, there is always room for laughter. They have a genuine love of life and a keen interest in the world around them. Me, too. We had a lot of fun together.

I was honored to be a part of such an important film. I once heard someone say that good acting is more about taking off a mask than putting one on, and that is certainly true in film acting. With the camera so close, you should be able to see right into your soul. So being able to do that is both terrifying and liberating.

And I like that about it. It used to be one or the other, didn’t it? was content to be at home baking pies,’ all of which we suspected was a lie. I’m looking forward to being less and less nice as I get older.

Acting isn’t about becoming famous; it’s about exploring the human soul. It’s easier to see in someone else, another actor, how they kind of vanish, and then this other persona appears. A great actor is a mystery.

Five billion people have acted out Hamlet. “To be or not to be.” And how do you do that while also finding your way into your own journey, your own way of telling it? I aspired to be a classical actress. I plodded along. I went to junior college in San Francisco and was a member of a Repertory Company.

My hero was Eva Le Gallienne, a great theatre actress at the turn of the century who founded her own company and wrote these hilarious autobiographies at the time. Our children see us in a certain way, and we want to be seen in a certain way by them. I certainly want to be a strong, stable, loving, and consistent presence in my children’s lives.

But we, too, are human. It’s a mystery to me, based on my own life experiences and what I’ve witnessed, why some people can simply move on from traumatic experiences, particularly in childhood, while others are paralyzed by them.

I just don’t understand how or why that is. There is love for your parents, family, spouse, partner, and friends, but nothing compares to the nature of your connection with your child. It has its own personality, and it’s so serious and powerful that it’s a prism through which I see everything.
