In 2011, Newell was one of 34,000 people who submitted audition videos for Oxygen’s The Glee Project’s first season. Newell’s self-taped audition landed them a position among the 12 contestants for a seven-episode arc on Glee, as well as over one million MySpace views. They asserted themselves as an out homosexual man along the arc. They eventually finished as the first runner-up in the series.
Nonetheless, the producers were so taken with them that they chose to cast them in two episodes of Glee. In the third season episode “Saturday Night Glee-ver,” Newell made his debut appearance on Glee. They were cast as Wade “Unique” Adams, a transgender adolescent who was born with masculine gender identity. Wade, a bashful misfit, used art to express their feminine identity. Bill O’Reilly voiced worry on his nightly show that youngsters viewing the show unattended would be inspired to try with “alternative lifestyles,” which he said the show praised.
Newell said, “‘If Bill O’Reilly says something about you, you’re doing something good,’ my mother replied. He had just shown me to the general public and conservative audiences. There are a lot more individuals that are looking at me now… Wade and Unique are two folks who are just being themselves. If kids want to go do that, it’s a way for them to express themselves.”
They returned in two more episodes later in the season, completing their storey arc. Newell was accepted into Berklee College of Music for the fall 2012 semester but instead chose to relocate to Los Angeles to rejoin the cast of Glee for the show’s fourth season. In the fourth season opener, “The New Rachel,” Unique returned as a recurring cast member on Glee.
In 2012, Newell and the rest of the ensemble were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series but were defeated by Modern Family. Because of the character’s popularity, Newell was elevated to the main cast for the fifth season. Newell was not a regular cast member in the sixth and final season, but he did appear as a recurrent guest star.

Newell’s performance with the Transpersons Choir of 200 performers of “I Know Where I’ve Been” from Hairspray was a highlight of the sixth season. Newell has performed at a variety of events throughout the years, including the Coachella Festival, as well as many LGBT events and pride festivals. They also performed at the Governors Ball Music Festival and BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, among other venues.
Newell announced in October 2013 that they had signed with Big Beat Records and that their debut album will be released. It was also confirmed that Adam Anders will be producing it. On June 3, 2014, they released their debut song, a version of Sigma’s “Nobody to Love.”Newell began a series of cover songs and collaborations in 2015. They contributed feature vocals to the re-released version of Clean Bandit’s “Stronger” in March, and later that month.
They collaborated with Russian DJ Matvey Emerson to make a disco-house remix of Robin S.’s hit “Show Me, Love.” They collaborated with Blonde, a British electro duo, by contributing vocals in their track “All Cried Out” throughout the summer. They then began working with the American electro duo The Knocks on the song “Collect My Love,” which they described as “a soaring disco highlight” in which they achieved “staggering heights.”
The song, from the EP So Classic, will be featured in The Knocks’ first album 55, due out in March 2016.The media reacted well to their original song “This Ain’t Over,” which was published in January 2016. Out remarked: “Even if just for a few minutes, the lively dance-pop single brilliantly revives disco. Newell manages to offer This Ain’t Over with genuine skill without the frills of contrived radio music.”
On ‘This Ain’t Atop,’ Newell’s unmistakable voice shines out like a victorious beacon over a thundering, gorgeous dance-pop background,” Spin stated. “This is basically diva vocal acrobatics performed with the swagger of a queen,” Vulture concluded.”This Ain’t Over” was confirmed as the first single from their debut extended play, Power, which features Diane Warren, Nile Rodgers, MNEK, and DJ Cassidy as producers. Big Beat will release the EP on February 19th.
In 2016, Newell toured with fellow Glee alum Adam Lambert from February 23 to April 2 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. Following the tour, Newell recorded “Kill the Lights,” a new song with Power producers DJ Cassidy and Nile Rodgers, which was released on April 8, 2016, by Atlantic Records. It was thought to be one of a few tunes Newell was working on for HBO’s Vinyl series.
The song was recorded the previous year when Newell was working with Clean Bandit, Blonde, and The Knocks, and it motivated the producers to collaborate with them on their debut extended play. The song was re-released later that month, this time with Jess Glynne’s vocals. Newell returned to the studio following the success of their debut extended play Power and their tour with Adam Lambert.
They released their first single outside of their latest collaboration, “Need Somebody,” on June 3, 2016. On June 3, it was released exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music, with additional platforms following a few days later.Newell contributed backup vocals to their largest collaboration to date, the humanitarian track “Hands,” in July 2016. Blige, Jason Derulo, Imagine Dragons, Jennifer Lopez, Adam Lambert, Tyler Glenn, MNEK, RuPaul, Mary Lambert, and Nate Ruess are among the artists who appear on the album. Newell made their Broadway debut in the production of Once on This Island in 2017, as Asaka. They began vocal training with NYC voice coach Mike Ruckles as part of their preparation.
In terms of music, Newell has made a comeback as a featured artist on house musician Kokiri’s song “Other Side of Love.”They presently play Mo, a genderfluid DJ and the protagonist’s next-door neighbour, on NBC’s musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. On Sunday’s episode of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Mo (Alex Newell) begins to warm up to the prospect of meeting Perry’s (David St. Louis) young children, even though he has no natural affinity for children.
In an exclusive sneak look obtained by ET, Mo mentions the possibility of melting the ice with Perry’s children.”I apologise for not paying more attention to your son’s stuffed animal crisis. “I’m not a parent,” Mo admits, “and I don’t always get it right.” No, it isn’t, which is why I’ve been putting in a lot of effort,” Mo admits, adding that he is now CPR-certified and the proud owner of a new pet hamster.
