Alessia Cara was born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, on July 11, 1996. She modified her last name to “Cara” to make it easier to pronounce at the start of her career. Her father was born in Canada but is of Italian origin. Her mother is an immigrant from Italy. She was reared in an extremely conservative household with three siblings. Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic Secondary School was where she completed her education.

She was artistically interested from an early age, and as a youngster, she penned poems and performed on stage. She enjoyed singing and learned to play the guitar on her own. She began uploading her cover songs to her own YouTube account when she was 13 years old. Her YouTube channel swiftly grew in popularity and grabbed the attention of many music fans, leading to her securing a deal with EP Entertainment.

She despises gatherings and social networking sites since she is an introvert. Her romantic history is unknown. Despite becoming a musical sensation at such a young age, she loves her parents and listens to their advice on crucial topics, which helps her stay grounded and modest. She has a talent for mimicking in addition to singing. While speaking with ‘Best Health Magazine’ at Duracell’s 10th Annual event in Toronto for young patients, she aggressively advocated for the anti-make-up campaign for women in Hollywood.

Cara started uploading tapes of herself covering different songs, including those by her idol and major inspiration, Amy Winehouse, when she was 13 years old. Cara was discovered three years later, in 2013, by Tony Perez, the founder of the record company EP Entertainment, when his daughter alerted him to Cara’s rendition of The Neighborhood’s “Sweater Weather.”

Cara kept the news to herself and her family after signing with EP and being matched with writing partner Sebastian Kole, preferring to concentrate on completing high school while establishing her career. In 2015, she told Paper magazine, “The toughest thing about it was having to sneak about and handle school and the studio at the same time.” “I still wanted to have the whole experience of high school.” I’ve always known that music would be my Plan A, and everything else would be a compromise. I was secretly hoping for a chance at this.”

Cara joined Def Jam Records in 2014, where she collaborated with producers Pop & Oak (Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Ariana Grande). Cara’s first track, “Here,” was released on April 27, 2015, and was inspired by her experience of feeling alone and alone at a party. The song, which features samples from Isaac Hayes and Portishead, was played over 500,000 times on The Fader in only one week. It also charted on Spotify’s viral list and received notice from Billboard and Chatelaine, among other outlets.

The song was dubbed “a beautifully detailed vignette” by Spin’s Harley Brown, and it was selected No. 21 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 greatest songs of 2015. “Here” was on the Billboard Hot 100 list for 34 weeks, peaking at No. 5. In the United States and Canada, it was finally certified triple platinum.

Cara’s five-song EP Four Pink Walls was released on August 26, 2015, as “Here” was climbing the charts. It features “Here” as well as four additional original tracks for which Cara directed her own selfie-style music videos. The EP “runs the whole range of genres, from modern pop and electro to classic soul,” according to MTV’s Loren Diblasi. Cara’s voice is beautiful throughout, while yet retaining the gritty texture we’ve come to adore.”

The EP garnered mostly excellent reviews, with Metacritic giving it 74 out of 100 ratings. “The R&B slow-burners and buoyant pop tunes on 19-year-old Canadian vocalist Alessia Cara’s first EP sound more like a personal manifesto than a party playlist,” observed Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone. Michael J. Warren of Exclaim! awarded the album a 7/10 rating, saying, “Cara’s strengths lay in her anti-pop star polish and self-determined presentation, which are mirrored well in her composition.” Cara has been labeled “the pop singer who is making introversion chic” by Paper magazine.

Cara made her network television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 29, 2015, with a performance of “Here.” Four Pink Walls reached No. 11 on Billboard’s Canadian albums list and No. 31 on the Billboard 200.

Cara’s first album, Know-It-All, was released shortly after Four Pink Walls and “Here.” The album was released on November 13, 2015, and it includes all five songs from Cara’s previous album, Four Pink Walls, as well as five new original songs co-written by Cara and produced by Pop & Oak, Sebastian Kole, and others. The album produced the hit single “Wild Things,” which reached No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold in the United States and triple platinum in Canada, and “Scars to Your Beautiful,” a self-acceptance anthem that reached No. 8 on the Hot 100 and was certified double platinum in the United States and platinum in Canada.

Critics praised Know-It-All, giving it a score of 70 out of 100 on Metacritic. ExclaimRyan !’s B. Patrick called it “a vibrant manifestation of popular music, viewed through a lens of teenage angst and determinism,” while Billboard’s Clover Hope called it “the first album with a strong sense of adolescent optimism and a spoonful of clever cynicism.”

The album was distinguished by “artfully uncomfortable earnestness,” according to Jon Pareles of the New York Times. Pitchfork’s Jonah Bromwich, in a dissenting assessment, gave the album a 5/10, criticizing its “bland, vaguely rebellious lyrics” and writing that “Cara’s charming personality is often hard to excavate from behind the layers of pop gloss that have been heaped on top of her.” “The seeds are there for the future if she (or her label) lets her rawer impulses breathe,” he said.

In both the United States and Canada, Know-It-All was certified platinum. Cara was nominated for four Juno Awards in 2016, including the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award. She was also nominated for six ASCAP Pop Music Awards, winning the award for Most Performed Song (“Here”) in one of them. She was awarded the Breakout Artist of 2016 by SOCAN. She spent most of that year on the road, promoting her first album.

She went on to work on other projects as well. She sang on Russian DJ Zedd’s song “Stay,” which went double platinum in the United States and quadruple platinum in Canada. She also sang “How Far I’ll Go,” a song composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Disney animated film Moana’s soundtrack (2016). In the United States, the song was certified double platinum.

In 2017, Cara was awarded two MTV Video Music Awards: Best Fight Against the System (“Scars to Your Beautiful”) and Best Dance Video (“Stay”). She was also nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2018, one of which she won for Best New Artist.

The Pains of Growing, Cara’s second full-length album, was released on November 30, 2018. It was less commercially successful than her last album, debuting at No. 21 on the Billboard Canadian albums list and No. 71 on the Billboard 200 album chart; neither ranking saw it climb much higher. “Growing Pains,” the album’s first song, was released on June 15, 2018. It charted at No. 65 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and No. 36 on Canada’s singles chart.

The Pains of Growing, like her other films, earned positive reviews from reviewers, with a Metacritic score of 72 out of 100. “At barely 22 years old, Cara doesn’t seem gimmicky, nor like an over-produced product of a record company,” commented Beth Bowles of Exclaim! She’s unadulterated and unadulterated, and she’s a clear example of an artist who will only grow in popularity.” The Pains of Growing is “a winningly honest second album that confirms she’s more memorable,” according to Nick Levine of NME.

Cara’s Pains of Growing Tour kicked off in Ottawa on May 11th, 2019. She also acted as an opener for Shawn Mendes during his gigs in the United States and Canada that year. Cara was nominated for Latin Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 2019. In 2020, she is up for six Juno Awards, including Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Artist of the Year.

She was also expected to headline the Juno Awards event in Saskatoon on March 15, 2020, making her the youngest Juno host ever. However, because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the gala was canceled. Cara performed and won three Juno Awards: Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year, all at an online event.
