Alec made a guest appearance as Sasha Mischenko in an episode of BBC One and Netflix’s six-part crime drama mini-series “River” in 2015, and landed the role of Dmitri in David Koepp’s action-comedy “Mortdecai,” alongside Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow; the latter is an adaptation of Kyril Bonfiglioli’s “Mortdecai Trilogy” book collection.

It was followed by his performance of A400 Crewman in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” the fifth chapter of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, which was released in 2015 and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year, starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson.

One of the most strange and moving films of the last year or so has finally made its way to theatres. Never Gonna Snow Again, Poland’s Oscar bid for 2020, is currently in cinemas and will likely be available on VOD soon. The strange film follows a Ukrainian massage therapist named Zhenia, who becomes the fascination of a little Polish village.

Each of the inhabitants begins to hire him, projecting their sentiments and desires into him. Even to the audience, who are urged to focus and project, much like the villagers, Zhenia’s aspirations and identity remain a mystery. But even the town is perhaps a homogeneous purgatory of a suburban ideal, not founded in reality. Overall, it’s an odd and engrossing cinematic experience.

Alec Utgoff, the 35-year-old Stranger Things actor, is at the center of it all. The actor, who was born in Ukraine, has been working in cinema and television for a decade, but this is his greatest feature part to date and a tremendous step forward in terms of how directors may cast him.

We spoke with him recently about his career and this specific job. Though his visage is famous to the millions of people who watch Stranger Things, and he easily confesses to appreciating the genre (“Honestly, I believe sci-fi is my thing,” he says), he is frequently disappointed with the parts he is given. “To this day, I always portray someone who is maimed, killed, or is about to be killed.”

Despite his fluency in English, he feels that English-language authors lack the ability to write Russian characters. Caricatures, rather than characters, is how he describes them. He has, however, committed his fair number of them. “You’ve needed to pay your bills,” says the narrator. “I’m right where everyone else is!”

He aspires to do more demanding roles, and he is especially interested in working in a period piece. His ancestors have a history of historical drama in their blood / “Archeologist is my uncle’s profession. There are a lot of history professors in my family. This is what we’re talking about, and it’s what I’m getting at.”

Of course, Never Gonna Snow Again is a modern arthouse riddle, not a historical drama. Nonetheless, it provided him with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a prominent part and a genuine test. Surprisingly, he wasn’t completely sold right away. Instead of sending him a script, the filmmakers provided him with a notion.

“Guys, I’m not sure what I can offer you in this since I’m not sure what I’m talking about!” He states this while reenacting his first discussion with Malgorzata Szumowska and Micha Englert, her regular collaborator. “Without the script, I can’t work.” I believe I will have to decline.”

Fortunately, the directors were as obstinate as Utgoff, and they convened a meeting. “Malgo was a delightful and fascinating character. She created the entire scene. Then, within two weeks, we had a script. It had a Woland-like feel about it. He’s the devil, so to speak, coming in and saving people.”

The early draught of the script was significantly different, with more definite details about his character, including the addition of a sibling. When the screenplay was tossed out again, the actor is refreshingly frank about his reservations. “You see, I’m more at ease when I’m in character than when I’m improvising all the time.” He informs me. “Because that way I can plan ahead of time and think of all the many things I could do with it.”

Despite his reservations, he learned to go with the flow and came to like the collaborative improvisational atmosphere that the directors create on set, which involves tailoring the parts to the performers’ abilities. “I took two years of ballet in high school, so Malgo says, ‘Okay, now improvise,'” he laughs at his hypnotic dance moment. “However, I’m not a dancer!” She discovered that I can play the piano, therefore I perform piano in the movie as well.”
