Bailon says, “… come from extremely modest roots in the slums of the Lower East Side and without having any “Hollywood” ties… It was not plausible. I also participated as an actor in all church and school productions… Therefore, when the chance arose for me to join a lady group, I was prepared to do so. Epic Records became the band’s new record label.

The other two band members were named Kiely Williams and Naturi Naughton, and in 1999, they started recording what would become their first album. The first iteration of 3LW’s lineup came together in 1999. The band’s first song, “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right),” was released in the late autumn of 2000. The chart success of “No More” was followed by the release of “Playas Gon’ Play” in early 2001.

On November 14, 2000, the band released their first album under their name, named 3LW. After selling over one million copies in the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded the album platinum status. In 2001, 3LW recorded a song called “What More Can I Give” with various musicians, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Beyoncé, Luther Vandross, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey. The song was written in reaction to the 9/11 attacks. Late in 2001, they worked with Lil’ Romeo and Nick Cannon to create “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” which was included on the soundtrack for Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius.

The first half of 2002 was spent in the studio by 3LW, working on recording an album that was provisionally named Same Game, Different Rules. The album and its planned lead single, “Uh Oh,” were shown to the label, but they believed it did not appeal to enough stations. Epic was about to dump the ladies when the music from Same Game, Different Rules was discovered on the internet in MP3 format. However, the leak caused them to reconsider.

Because of a fan support movement for 3LW called “Never Let Go of 3LW” (named after the band’s song “Never Let Go”), the act was kept together despite the failure of the album. After completing a fresh collection of tunes, the band returned in the summer of 2002 with the single “I Do (Wanna Get Close To You),” produced by P. Diddy and featured Loon. During the previous summer, the band appeared on Nickelodeon’s “Live on Sunset” concert program, where they played their songs.

After a particularly intense fight in August, group member Naughton left for good just as the band was about to release its newest long-playing album; A Girl Can Mack. Although the release date of A Girl Can Mack was delayed by one month, sales still needed improvement, and the album had a poor start on the Billboard 200, starting at position No. 15 with just 53,000 copies sold in its first week.

When the band was getting close to being ready to deliver their second album, Naturi Naughton announced that she was no longer a part of the band. Naughton said she had been involved in a series of disagreements and problems with Bailon, Williams, and their management, which ultimately culminated in a heated debate that included an altercation in August of 2002.

Not much longer after that, Naughton said that she had been expelled from the organization without her will. Because Williams and Bailon continued to work together under the moniker “3LW,” the media often makes light of the situation by referring to them as “2LW.”According to the cover story of the issue of Sister 2 Sister magazine that was published in October 2002, Kiely and Adrienne claimed that they had received death threats and were forced to increase their level of protection.
