Sandler portrayed Smitty, Theo Huxtable’s pal, in The Cosby Show (1987–1988) in the mid to late 1980s. He appeared on the MTV game program Remote Control as the characters “Trivia Delinquent” and “Stud Boy.” Sandler began his career performing in comedy clubs at the insistence of his brother when he was just 17 years old. Dennis Miller, a comedian from Los Angeles, noticed Sandler’s performance.

Miller referred him to Lorne Michaels, the producer of Saturday Night Live. Sandler joined SNL as a writer in 1990 and was promoted to a featured performer the following year, earning a reputation for playing hilarious original songs on the program, including “The Chanukah Song.” He departed the program in 1995 to pursue a career in cinema.

Sandler made his feature film debut in 1989 with the picture Going Overboard. In 1995, he featured in Billy Madison, a film about a grown man who repeats grades 1–12 to regain his father’s respect and the right to inherit his father’s multimillion-dollar hotel company.

He followed this up with a string of commercially successful comedies, including Bulletproof (1996), Happy Gilmore (1996), and The Wedding Singer (1996). (1998). He was originally cast in the bachelor-party-themed comedy/thriller Very Bad Things (1998) but was forced to withdraw owing to his participation in one of his first successes, The Waterboy (1998).

While his previous films earned little critical acclaim, his subsequent films, starting with Punch-Drunk Love (2002), have received virtually universally good reviews. According to several critics, Sandler exhibited far more acting skill than was previously spent on badly written screenplays and undeveloped characters.

Audiences have stayed loyal to Sandler’s slapstick comedy, with his films making more than US$100 million. Sandler has branched out beyond the genre of goofy comedy to play more serious roles in films such as the aforementioned Punch-Drunk Love (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination), Spanglish (2004), and Reign Over Me (2006). (2007).

In Big Daddy, he portrayed a devoted father figure (1999). He met Jacqueline Samantha Titone — his future wife and mother of his daughter — during shooting when she was cast as the waitress from The Blarney Stone Bar.

Sandler was considered for the role of Jamie Foxx in Collateral at one time (2004). He was also a contestant for the part of Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Jim Carrey and Johnny Depp (2005).

He returned to more serious material with Mike Binder’s Reign Over Me (2007), a drama about a guy who loses his whole family in the 9/11 attacks and rekindles an old college roommate acquaintance (played by Don Cheadle).

He co-starred in the 2007 film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry with Kevin James as a New York City firefighter who pretends to be homosexual to continue an insurance fraud that benefits his best friend’s children.

Sandler starred in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (2008), a comedy about a Mossad spy who fakes his death and relocates to the United States to pursue a career as a hairstylist.

The film was written by Sandler, Judd Apatow (who was Sandler’s former roommate when both were starting), and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog creator Robert Smigel, and directed by Dennis Dugan of Happy Gilmore.

Sandler appeared in Bedtime Tales (2008), a fantasy film directed by Adam Shankman of Bringing Down the House, about a stressed-out real estate developer whose bedtime stories to his niece and nephew begin to come true. This was Sandler’s first family film and his first for Walt Disney. Keri Russell and Russell Brand, an English comedian, co-starred.

Sandler was previously in discussions to feature in Quentin Tarantino’s World War II thriller Inglourious Basterds, which he confirmed, but he has now said that he will not be able to do so owing to a scheduling issue with Funny People. In June 2007, his production firm, Happy Madison, revealed that it had made a preemptive purchase of Mitch Albom’s screenwriting debut.

I never had a lecture from my father stating, “This is what you must do or should not do,” but I just learnt to follow my father’s example. My father was not without flaws. He had a temper. I took a portion of it. He would snap, but as he grew older, he began to settle down.

He learnt about life, but the most important lesson he taught my whole family was that family was paramount and that no matter what if a family member needs you, you go and assist them. He just made us feel at ease and respectful of other families, including my mother… part of my father’s fury contributed to my developing a sense of humour to calm the old guy down.

That type of wit.
I wasn’t the kind of child who grew up thinking, “One day, I’ll win an Oscar and deliver a speech.” That was not my intention. I just want to perform the finest job possible.

To be quite honest, I never considered reviews when I first started. I never considered what others would think about me. I was a young man eager to pursue a career as a comedian and actor, and all I wanted was to do what I was doing.

[about his involvement with Click (2006)] If it’s something I believe I can do well, I like being in them, and if it’s something I believe Rob Schneider or David Spade could do better than me, I advise them to go for it. I have no idea how we decide. There is this phenomenon, this “Click,” in fact, one of my pals phoned me up, my partner informed me about Steve Koren’s notion.

By the way, Steve Koren, the co-author with Mark O’Keefe, Steve Koren I’ve been aware of since I was 22 years old. He worked on Saturday Night Live as a page (1975). He would answer the phones and leave messages for us, and then he would leave a message for you, saying, “Yes, indeed.

I composed a joke.” And he’d give you the joke, at which point you’d say, “Howdy. Steve Koren is rather amusing “and then he writes Bruce Almighty (2003) and this stuff, and he’s a tremendous writer and an all-around nice person.

And anyhow, they informed me of the film’s idea and asked if I was interested; I didn’t even read the screenplay; I just said, “True. That is a tremendous concept; it sounds fantastic.” That is how I came up with this screenplay; with just three phrases describing the film’s plot, I knew it could be fantastic.
