Northern Irish actor Aaron McCusker has racked up credits in the US series Dexter, The Astronauts Wives Club, and Fortitude since wrapping up his seven-year run as the evil Jamie Maguire on Shameless in 2013. He will next be seen in Sharon Horgan’s new comedy series Women on the Verge, premieres this fall.

This time around, the actor’s next role as the famous Freddie Mercury’s long-term Irish partner Jim Hutton in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody takes him beyond the confines of television. It puts him in the position to take on the duty of portraying a real person.

When Jim met Freddie in London, he worked as a hairstylist, which he had learned from his mother. They became inseparable and remained so until Freddie’s death from AIDS in November 1991, while they were still together. Jim went away at the age of 60, 19 years after being born.

Aaron felt it was vital to do the man’s memory justice, and it looks that he may have been successful. He tells the Independent newspaper. As an example, “While I was shooting, a member of the crew came up to me one day and introduced himself as Jim and congratulated me on a job well done; it was extremely lovely to hear that.”

With his Armagh accent still as melodic as ever, Mr. Sutton describes Jim as “very genuine, a genuinely wonderful man, so he was.” He says this in the city where he has established roots with his wife Jennie Sutton and their children, despite being surrounded by Mancunians.

No one had a terrible word to say about him, and whatever I’ve read about individuals who knew him personally, nobody had a bad thing to say about him,” he says, “and he was instrumental in calming Freddie down.” He had a positive impact on him. He wasn’t with him because he wanted to be famous and rich. “It was true love at first sight.”

Over the previous 12 years, the development of Bohemian Rhapsody has been a little bumpy. If there was ever a project to which the phrase “development hell” could be applied, it would be this one, which saw Sacha Baron Cohen and then Ben Whishaw attached to the character of Freddie. Dexter Fletcher was hired to take over as director during production after Bryan Singer was alleged to have had a falling out with performers Rami Malek, who was the final pick for Mercury, and Tom Hollander, who played Jim Beach.

Even though Aaron claims to be unaware of the details of what transpired, he compliments both Singer and Fletcher for their work as directors. He also hails Mr. Robot star Rami, who shares a remarkable likeness to the late actor for doing a “great job.”

The film chronicles Mercury’s life from the beginnings of Queen through their Live Aid concert in the summer of 1985 and includes interviews with Mercury. When Freddie first saw Jim, it was just before that memorable performance and the two remained together until the star’s death. Most of Aaron’s parts were directed by Fletcher, who took over for Singer for the last two weeks of filming and post-production when Singer was injured.

In his words about Fletcher, “He made you feel calm.” “Because he’s an actor himself, he understands the situation and makes it a lot of fun for everyone.” “It was a fantastic set to be on towards the end of the night.” Even though Aaron defines the role as “four or five” scenes in length, he considers it significant since it is the first time he has portrayed a homosexual character.

McCusker has featured in several films and television shows, including Ultimate Force, The Bill, and a television version of Jonathan Coe’s book The Rotters’ Club. Jennie Sutton, his long-term partner, and he were married in April 2009 at Beamish Hall, a country house hotel in the Scottish Borders.

He appeared in the music video for the song “Making Money” by Micro lip, in which he performed. In Dexter’s eighth season, the serial murderer AJ Yates was portrayed. In the ABC television series The Astronaut Wives Club, he played astronaut Wally Schirra, married to an astronaut. In the psychological thriller Fortitude, he plays the role of Jason Donnelly.

On April 18, 2016, he made his television debut in the role of Wesley, an MI6 agent, on the American police drama Castle (episode: “Backstabber”). In Bohemian Rhapsody, McCusker portrayed Freddie Mercury’s long-term partner Jim Hutton (2018). McCusker will appear as Finn Maguire in the third season of the Nordic noir detective series Marcella, which will premiere in 2020.
