“Criminal Minds” chronicles the trials and tribulations of the FBI’s elite Behavioral Analysis Unit and includes a broad and eclectic cast that complements one another, much to the pleasure of lifelong fans. The on-screen friendships and connections that blossomed throughout “Criminal Minds'” lengthy run are legendary, and the program had a profound effect on the police procedural genre.

Cook portrays Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, a former soccer star who joins the BAU after reading a book by David Rossi (Mantegna), and Vangsness portrays Penelope Garcia, the team’s computer assistant. Fans of the program may wonder whether these two actors are real-life pals, and the answer is not unexpected.

Although A. J. Cook’s character is best known for his intense devotion, it turns out that Kirsten Vangsness is the more protective one in real life! Cook was dismissed at one time over the show’s lengthy run, eliciting strong reactions from both Vangsness and the watching audience at large. She was promptly rehired in her previous job, but what transpired in the meantime demonstrated just how close Vangsness and Cook are.

In a 2010 interview with Screen Rant at San Diego Comic-Con, Vangsness described the experience as follows: “It most emphatically did not feel pleasant and most emphatically does not make you feel as though, ‘Oh, everything is OK!’ It makes you acutely aware that this is a job and that if they need your services, they will retain you; if they do not, you will be terminated.

Not that she is not required! However, someone determined that she was unnecessary, which is a horrible judgment — in my view… It’s like if you’re renting from someone and they get to determine who stays and who leaves — and it’s FANTASTIC!” Vangsness and the other cast members disagreed with the higher-ups’ decision to dismiss Cook, and so she decided to take action.

Vangsness went so far as to sign a fan petition to bring Cook back, which garnered support from celebrities such as Jane Lynch and Helen Mirren. The petition was successful, and Cook’s character was reinstated on the program. Vangsness remarked in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, “It was a defining moment – [they] had just dismissed my pal. It was a complete surprise. It has a direct effect on morale.” According to these interviews, Cook and Vangsness seem to be far more compatible in real life than their on-screen counterparts.
